Frequently asked questions
What is security door mesh?
Security door mesh is a strong screen fitted to doors and windows to resist intruders while allowing airflow and visibility. We supply two main types: perforated aluminium mesh (such as Aluguard and Visionguard) and woven stainless steel 304 and 316 mesh. Both are far stronger than standard flyscreen and are commonly powder-coated black for a clean finish.
What’s the difference between stainless steel and aluminium security mesh?
Woven stainless steel mesh (304 or 316) uses heavy interlocking wires that resist knife shear and impact, making it the strongest option — 316 is best for coastal areas. Perforated aluminium mesh is lighter, offers one-way vision and privacy, and is powder-coated. Stainless suits maximum security; aluminium suits privacy, weight and cost.
What is one-way or limited vision mesh?
One-way limited vision mesh lets you see out clearly while making it difficult for people outside to see in during daylight. It combines privacy, security and airflow, which is why it’s popular for front doors and ground-floor windows. Visionguard is a thicker version offering added strength.
What Australian standards apply to security screens and bushfire mesh?
Security screen doors and window grilles in Australia are generally tested against the AS 5039 series (with AS 5040 for installation and AS 5041 for test methods), covering impact, jemmy, pull and knife-shear resistance. Bushfire protection is governed by AS 3959 and BAL (Bushfire Attack Level) ratings. Confirm which rating your project requires and we’ll advise on a suitable product.
What’s the difference between a flyscreen and a security screen?
A flyscreen is designed to keep insects out while letting air in — it isn’t intruder-resistant. A security screen uses much stronger mesh and framing to resist forced entry. Note that stainless steel and aluminium flyscreen mesh are considerably stronger than fibreglass, and some are BAL-rated for bushfire-prone areas.
Which mesh is suitable for bushfire-prone (BAL) areas?
For bushfire-prone locations, corrosion-resistant metal mesh with a fine aperture is used to resist ember attack — our aluminium and stainless steel flyscreen mesh options include BAL-rated products. The required BAL rating depends on your site assessment under AS 3959, so check the rating specified for your build before ordering.
