Frequently asked questions
What is welded wire mesh?
Welded wire mesh is made by welding wires together at each intersection to form a rigid sheet with square openings. It’s built from low-carbon (mild) steel or stainless steel wire, giving strong, flat, durable panels. We supply it galvanised (electro or hot-dip) and in stainless steel 304 and 316, as rolls or flat sheets for fencing, cages, guarding and fabrication.
What’s the difference between welded wire mesh and woven wire mesh?
Welded wire mesh has its wires welded at each intersection, making it rigid and structural — ideal for fencing, cages, partitions and reinforcement. Woven wire mesh is interlaced on a loom rather than welded, giving finer, more precise apertures suited to filtration and architectural screens. Choose welded for strength and rigidity, woven for fine apertures and finish.
What materials and finishes are available?
We stock welded mesh in galvanised low-carbon steel — electro-galvanised or hot-dip galvanised — and in stainless steel 304 and 316. Hot-dip galvanised suits general outdoor and structural use, while stainless 316 is the best choice for coastal and marine Australian conditions where corrosion resistance matters most.
What aperture and wire sizes do you stock?
Our welded mesh runs from around 6.35mm (1/4 inch) openings up to 150mm (6 inch), with wire diameters from about 0.6mm up to 4mm depending on the grade. Finer apertures suit aviaries and pest or rodent screening; coarser, heavier-gauge panels suit fencing, guarding and structural work. We can advise on the right combination for your job.
What is welded wire mesh used for?
Common uses include fencing and security barriers, bird aviaries and animal enclosures, tree guards, pest and rodent-proofing, machine and safety guards, ventilation covers, partitions and infill panels, and reinforcement. The right aperture, wire gauge and finish depend on the application — contact us with your requirements.
Do you supply welded mesh in rolls or sheets, and across Australia?
Both — we supply welded wire mesh as rolls and as flat galvanised and stainless steel sheets, cut to suit your project. A1 Metal Mesh is Australian owned and operated and ships welded mesh Australia-wide from Melbourne.
