Frequently asked questions

What is woven wire mesh?

Woven wire mesh is made by interlacing metal wires at right angles on a loom, producing precise, uniform apertures. We weave it from Stainless Steel 304 and 316L, brass, copper and bronze in plain and twill weaves, for architectural, filtration and industrial use. Mesh is cut to your ordered length.

What is woven wire mesh used for?

It suits architectural facades, balustrades and partitions, insect and bushfire screens, machine guards, and precision filtration or sieving in pharmaceutical, chemical and food processing. Fine counts up to 500 mesh handle micron-level filtration, while coarser weaves work for decorative and structural jobs.

What’s the difference between woven wire mesh and welded wire mesh?

Woven wire mesh is interlaced on a loom, giving tighter tolerances and finer apertures ideal for filtration and architectural work. Welded wire mesh has wires welded at each intersection, making it more rigid — better for fencing, cages and structural panels.

What materials and mesh sizes are available?

We stock woven wire mesh in Stainless Steel 304 and 316L, brass, copper and bronze. Apertures run from around 26 microns (500 mesh) for fine filtration up to coarse openings for screening and architectural use, across a range of wire diameters. 316L is best for coastal and marine Australian conditions.

How do I choose the right mesh count and aperture?

Mesh count is the number of openings per linear inch — higher counts mean finer apertures. For filtration, match the aperture (in microns) to the smallest particle you need to retain. For architectural or screening use, choose on visibility, airflow and strength. Contact us with your application for a recommendation.

Do you supply woven wire mesh across Australia?

Yes — A1 Metal Mesh is Australian owned and operated and ships woven wire mesh Australia-wide from Melbourne. Mesh is cut to the meterage you order, and we can advise on custom specifications for architectural, filtration and industrial projects.
