Frequently asked questions
How is the open area of expanded metal mesh measured?
Open area is the percentage of the sheet that is open space rather than solid strand. It’s determined by the LWM and SWM diamond dimensions together with the strand width — smaller diamonds and wider strands give lower open area and more strength, while larger diamonds give higher airflow, light and visibility for screening and facade work.
Is expanded metal mesh suitable for outdoor and coastal use?
Yes. For outdoor exposure we recommend hot-dip galvanised mild steel or aluminium, both of which resist corrosion well. Aluminium is the better choice for coastal and marine environments where salt exposure is high, and it’s also lighter for facade and privacy applications. Galvanised steel suits general outdoor walkway and security use.
Can expanded metal mesh be cut, rolled or fabricated to size?
Expanded metal can be cut, folded, rolled and welded, which makes it well suited to custom fabrication for guards, enclosures, ramps and facade panels. Because it’s stretched from a single sheet, it holds its shape without unravelling at cut edges. Let us know your finished dimensions and we can advise on the right grade.
What thickness of expanded metal do I need for a walkway or ramp?
Load-bearing applications like walkways, trailer ramps and industrial flooring use heavier grades — our walkway meshes run up to around 5mm strand thickness for rigidity and grip underfoot. Lighter grades are fine for privacy screens, facades and guarding where load isn’t a factor.
Does expanded metal mesh provide a non-slip surface?
Yes. Standard (raised) expanded metal keeps its strands at an angle, creating a self-draining, non-slip surface that’s widely used for walkways, ramps, platforms and stair treads. This grip is a key reason it’s preferred over flat perforated or woven products in industrial flooring and access applications.
What sizes and finishes does A1 Metal Mesh stock?
We stock expanded metal in standard sheet sizes including 1220 x 2440mm and 1200 x 3000mm, in mild steel with hot-dip galvanised finish, Galbond steel and aluminium. Grades cover security mesh, small diamond, large expanded, walkway and privacy patterns — cut and supplied Australia-wide from Melbourne.
